Abstract

PHARMACOGNOSTICAL STANDARDIZATION OF HARITAKI (TERMINALIA CHEBULA RETZ.): A MICROSCOPIC STUDY

ABSTRACT

Background: Haritaki (Terminalia chebula Retz.) is one of the most important medicinal plants described in Ayurveda and is widely used in numerous formulations for its Rasayana, Anulomana, and Tridoshahara properties. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the pharmacognostical and phytochemical characteristics of Haritaki fruit. Materials and Methods: Macroscopic, microscopic, powder microscopic, physicochemical,and preliminary phytochemical analyses of Terminalia chebula fruit were carried out using standard pharmacognostical procedures and methods prescribed in the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India. Results: Macroscopic examination revealed characteristic ovoid to obovoid fruits with five distinct longitudinal ridges, a wrinkled surface, and a yellowish-brown to blackish-brown colour. Microscopic evaluation showed an epicarp consisting of thick-walledepidermal cells, mesocarp containing parenchymatous cells with tannin deposits, sclereids, stone cells, vascular bundles, and calcium oxalate crystals. Powder microscopy identified the presence of stone cells, sclereids, tannin-containing parenchyma, fibres, starch grains, and calcium oxalate crystals. Physicochemical and phytochemical analyses established quality control parameters and confirmed the presence of tannins, phenolic compounds, flavonoids, glycosides, and other bioactive constituents. Conclusion: The observed pharmacognostical and phytochemical characteristics provide reliable diagnostic markers for the identification, authentication, and standardization of Terminalia chebula fruit. These findings support its quality assessment and therapeutic application in Ayurvedic formulations.
