Abstract

FRUITS OF ROSA BRUNONII LINDL. – AN EFFICIENT BIOREAGENT FOR REMOVAL OF TOXIC DYES FROM WATER

ABSTRACT

Ripened fruits of Rosa brunonii Lindl. have been collected from Badshahithaul, located in the Chamba block of Tehri district, Uttarakhand, India. Different parts of fruits viz. whole fruit (500 mg), seeds (500 mg) and deseeded peel with pulp (500 mg), have been separately treated with 50 mL of 10 mgL-1 aqueous solutions of the textile dyes Congo red (CR) and methylene blue (MB). The mixtures were continuously stirred for 3 hours to facilitate dye adsorption. The adsorption capacity was then analysed using a UV-Visible spectrophotometer. It was observed that the CR removal efficiency of the whole fruit, seeds, and pulp with peel of Rosa brunonii was 49.04%, 26.23%, and 71.95%, whereas the corresponding MB removal efficiencies were 83.90%, 57.50% and 83.70% respectively. The study demonstrates that the potential of various fruit parts of Rosa brunonii can be utilized as sustainable bio-reagents for the removal of hazardous textile dyes from contaminated water.
