Abstract

LIPOSOMAL DRUG DELIVERY OF HERBAL EXTRACT

ABSTRACT

Nanoliposome-based delivery systems for drugs have been proposed as a promising strategy to improve the therapeutic efficacy of herbal extracts. Although herbal bioactive compounds have important pharmacological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer and hepatoprotective effects, their clinical application is often limited by poor aqueous solubility, low bioavailability, instability, rapid degradation and inadequate target specificity. Nanoliposomes, which are nanosized vesicles of phospholipid, are an effective carrier system for the encapsulation of hydrophilic and lipophilic phytoconstituents. These are suitable for delivery of natural products because of biocompatibility, biodegradability, controlled drug release and enhanced cellular uptake. The review discusses the history of liposome development, composition, advantages, methods of preparationand physicochemical characterization. The encapsulation of herbal extracts into nanoliposomes is also covered, with emphasis on the improvements in stability, bioavailability, therapeutic efficacy and reduced toxicity. The review also discusses the therapeutic use of nanoliposomal herbal formulations in the treatment of cancer, infectious diseases, inflammatory disorders, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and skin-related disorders. Recent advances in nanotechnology such as surface-modified liposomes, ligand-targeted liposomes, PEGylated liposomes and stimulus-responsive liposomal systems are also discussed. Finally, the review emphasizes the significance of natural bioactive products as potential candidates for nanoliposomal drug delivery and their future prospects in modern pharmaceutical research. To summarize, the use of nanoliposome-based delivery systems can be an innovative strategy to potentially overcome the limitations of herbal medicines, enhancing their therapeutic potential and leading to the development of safer, more effective, and targeted herbal drug formulations.
