Abstract

FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF POLYHERBAL DENTAL PASTE OF MEDICINAL EXTRACTS BY USING ALLIUM CEPA AND KALONJI SEEDS

ABSTRACT

Oral diseases, including dental caries, plaque, gingivitis, and halitosis, are among the most prevalent health problems worldwide. Although conventional toothpastes effectively maintain oral hygiene, prolonged use of products containing synthetic chemicals may be associated with adverse effects such as tooth staining, altered taste, and mucosal irritation. These concerns have increased interest in herbal dental formulations that utilize medicinal plants with antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and astringent properties. The present study aimed to formulate and evaluate a herbal dental paste using selected herbal ingredients for effective oral care. The formulation was prepared using suitable excipients, including abrasives, binders, humectants, sweeteners, preservatives, and flavoring agents, along with herbal extracts. The prepared dental paste was evaluated for physicochemicalparameters such as appearance, pH, homogeneity, spreadability, extrudability, foamability, and stability. In addition, antimicrobial activity against common oral pathogens was assessed using standard laboratory methods. The formulated herbal dental paste exhibited satisfactory physicochemical characteristics, good stability, and promising antimicrobial activity, indicating its potential to reduce plaque formation and support oral hygiene. The study suggests that herbal dental paste may serve as a safe and effective alternative to conventional toothpaste by combining therapeutic efficacy with reduced risk of adverse effects. However, further clinical studies are required to confirm its long-term safety and effectiveness in maintaining oral health.
