FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF HERBAL SUNSCREEN

ABSTRACT Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is one of the major causes of various skin disorders, including premature aging, sunburn, and skin cancer. The increasing awareness regarding the harmful effects of synthetic sunscreen agents has led to a growing interest in herbal and natural alternatives. The present study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of an Herbal Sunscreen incorporating mangosteen (Garcinia mangos tana) peel extract, which is rich in xanthones and possesses strong antioxidant and photoprotective properties. The mangosteen peel extract was prepared using a suitable extraction method and incorporated into a topical sunscreen formulation along with other natural ingredients such as aloe vera gel, zinc oxide, and vitamin E. The prepared formulation was evaluated for various physicochemical parameters including pH, viscosity, spread ability, homogeneity, and stability. Additionally, the sunprotection factor (SPF) was determined using UV spectrophotometric analysis. The results indicated that the formulated Herbal Sunscreen exhibited good stability, acceptable physicochemical properties, and effective UV protection. The presence of natural antioxidants enhanced the protective effect against UV-induced skin damage. Thus, the developed formulation can be considered a safe, effective, and eco-friendly alternative to conventional synthetic sunscreens.
