CRITICAL EVALUATION OF JALPAKALPATARU COMMENTARY ON BASTISUTRIYA SIDDHI CHAPTER OF SIDDHI STHANA OF CHARAKA SAMHITA

ABSTRACT

The Jalpakalpataru commentary authored by Kaviraja Gangadhara Roy is one of the most comprehensive and analytically rich commentaries on the Charaka Samhita. This literary and analytical study critically evaluates the distinctive features of the Jalpakalpataru commentary on the Bastisutriya Siddhi Adhyaya (Chapter 3) of Siddhisthana, comparing it systematically with Chakrapani Datta's Ayurveda Dipika commentary. The study employed detailed verse-by-verse analysis, expert validation using a Likert scale, and Spearman's rank correlation for statistical analysis. The findings reveal that Gangadhara adopted a highly practical, clinically oriented, and pharmaceutically precise approach. His commentary introduces significant Pathabheda (textual variations), clearly specifies pharmaceutical proportions including Kalka, Ksheera, Jala, Sneha, and Kwatha reduction endpoints, and offers
