Mr. Kirubakaran M.*, Ms. Sandhiya P.
ABSTRACT Abrus precatorius L. is a medicinal plant widely used in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Siddha, and Unani for the treatment of various ailments. The plant contains several bioactive constituents, including alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, triterpenoids, phenolic compounds, and glycosides that contribute to its pharmacological activities. Traditionally, its leaves, roots, and seeds have been used for the management of fever, cough, skin disorders, neurological conditions, inflammation, and migraine. The anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties of Abrus precatorius suggest its potential role in migraine therapy. Phytochemical studies have identified compounds that may help reduce pain and inflammation associated with migraine attacks. However, the plant also contains toxic lectins such as abrin, which necessitate careful evaluation of safety and dosage. This reviewsummarises the traditional uses, phytochemical composition, therapeutic properties, and toxicological profile of Abrus precatorius, highlighting its potential as a natural therapeutic agent for migraine management and emphasising the need for further scientific and clinical investigations.
