Abstract

DIGITAL DISTURBANCE AND MENTAL HEALTH: AN AYURVEDIC PERSPECTIVE ON THE IMPACT OF SMARTPHONE USAGE IN MODERN LIFE

Dr. Divya Meena*, Dr. Durgawati Devi

ABSTRACT

Background: Smartphones have become an inseparable component of modern lifestyle, significantly influencing psychological health and behavioral patterns. Excessive smartphone use has been associated with anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, impaired concentration and social isolation. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of medicine, emphasizes balanced sensory usage, mental discipline and healthy lifestyle practices for maintaining psychological well-being. Continuous digital exposure may disturb Dosha equilibrium and impair mental faculties. Objective: To evaluate the impact of excessive smartphone usage on mental health and correlate its manifestations with Ayurvedic principles related to Manasika Bhavas, Dosha imbalance and improper sensory utilization. Methods: A narrative review was conducted using classical Ayurvedic literature and contemporary scientific studies related to smartphone use and mental health. Ayurvedic concepts including Asatmya Indriyartha Samyoga, Prajnaparadha and Tridosha imbalance were analyzed in relation to digital overexposure and psychological disturbances. Results: Excessive smartphone use was associated with increased stress, anxiety, depression, sleep disturbances, reduced attention span and behavioral dependency. Ayurveda correlates these manifestations with aggravation of Vata and Pitta Dosha, disturbance of Manovaha Srotas and impairment of Dhi, Dhriti and Smriti. Lifestyle interventions such as Dinacharya, Yoga, meditation, proper sleep and controlled sensory exposure may help restore mental balance and improve psychological resilience. Conclusion: Smartphone overuse adversely affects mental health and quality of life. Ayurvedic principles provide a holistic framework for understanding the psychological consequences of digital addiction and offer preventive lifestyle-based approaches for maintaining mental well-being in the digital era.

Keywords: Smartphone, Mental Health, Ayurveda, Vata Dosha, Digital Addiction, Stress, Anxiety, Manovaha Srotas.
