ABSTRACT

The antimicrobial activities of leaf extracts of Cleistopholis patens and aerial parts of Cassytha filiformis against clinical pathogens were evaluated and compared by in vitro method. The plant parts were collected fresh, shade-dried, pulverized and extracted with hot-water, methanol and n-hexane. Hot-water extraction was by 24 h maceration while extraction with methanol and n-hexane was done in a Soxhlet apparatus. The extracts were concentrated and dried separately under vacuum. The sensitivity of the extracts was done using standard methods. The respective mean MIC values of the methanol extract from Cassytha filiformis Linn against Candida albicans, Staph. aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were 10.06 ± 0.053 mg/ml, 15.38 ± 0.43 mg/ml, 14.42 ± 0.58 mg/ml and 13.33 ± 1.1 mg/ml while for hot water extract were 9.39 ± 0.38 mg/ml, 23.13 ± 0.68, 21.35 ± 2.38 mg/ml, and 10.83 ± 1.32 respectively. Moreso, the mean MIC values of the methanol extract from Cleistopholis patens against the test isolates were 10.48 ± 0.51 mg/ml (for candida albicans ), 33.13 ± 1.56 mg/ml (for staph. aureus), 27.69 ± 1.56 mg/ml ( for Escherichia coli), 17.50 ± 3.31 mg/ml (for Pseudomonas aeruginosa) .The results of statistical analysis at P< 0.05 showed that the extracts of the Cassytha filiformis Linn are significantly better antimicrobial agents than the leaf extracts of Cleistopholis patens (Benth) against Candida albicans,Staph.aureus, E.coli and Ps.aeruginosa.
