ABSTRACT

The purpose of this review is to explore the difficulties in penetration of drug across nail plate & enhancement of bioavaibillity of antifungal drug. Nail drug delivery systems face significant challenges due to the nail plate's inherent barrier properties, hindering effective treatment of conditions like onychomycosis and psoriasis. Conventional topical treatments often yield unsatisfactory results, emphasizing the need for innovative strategies to enhance drug penetration. This review explores recent advancements in nail drug delivery, including chemical method such as Keratolytic enhancers, physical method techniques such as microneedles and Laser ultraviolet light, mechanical method such as nail avulsion, Nail abrasion and novel drug formulations like nail lacquers and nanoparticles. By overcoming the challenges of nail drug delivery, these innovations hold promise for improvingtreatment efficacy and patient outcomes, ultimately enhancing the management of nail disorders. This systemic review covers the anatomy of a human nail, diseases related to nail plate, the formulations designed for nail application and some techniques used to enhance the topical bioavailability of the drugs across the nail, latest trends in drug delivery across the nail.
