HOLISTIC AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF SHEETAPITTA (URTICARIA): A CASE REPORT
Dr. Sachin Singh Basera*, Dr. K. Ravindra Bhat, Dr. Waheeda Banu
ABSTRACT Sheetapitta, defined in classical Ayurveda text as an acute Tridoshaja skin disorder, presents a clinical picture strikingly similar to urticaria in modern dermatology—characterized by rapid onset of wheals, intense itching, burning sensation, and swelling, often precipitated by identifiable dietary or environmental triggers. This case report details the successful holistic and individualized Ayurvedic management of Sheetapitta in a 35-year-old male suffering from recurrent, extensive urticarial eruptions unresponsive to conventional therapies. The patient’s management strategy was anchored in a classical Ayurvedic framework, integrating Nidana Parivarjana (elimination of causative factors), herbal formulations such as Haridrakhanda and Gandhaka Rasayana, and Panchakarma detoxification, specifically Virechana (therapeutic purgation). Adjunctive support included comprehensive dietary regulation, stress management, and lifestyle modifications. Over the course of therapy, marked clinical resolution and sustained remission were observed, with improvement in both physical and psychosocial domains. This case accentuates the strengths of Ayurveda in addressing not only symptomatic relief but also underlying pathophysiological imbalances, thereby reducing recurrence and enhancing quality of life. The report highlights unique considerations and challenges in adult presentations, supports the need for integrative protocols, and advocates for more robust clinical research into Ayurveda’s role in chronic dermatological disorders such as urticarial.
