ABSTRACT

Lifestyle disorders such as diabetes, obesity, and osteoporosis are rapidly increasing worldwide, posing a significant public health challenge. Dietary modification is recognized as a cost-effective and sustainable approach for the prevention and management of these chronic conditions. In this context, millets have emerged as “smart foods” due to their rich nutritional profile and functional health benefits. Millets are gluten-free cereal grains characterized by low glycemic index, high dietary fiber, essential micronutrients, and bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Evidence from experimental, clinical, and epidemiological studies suggests that regular consumption of millets improves glycemic control, enhances insulin sensitivity, promotes weight management, and supports bone health. Compared to refined cereals such as rice and wheat, millets offer superior nutritional value and contribute to metabolic and skeletal health. Additionally, millets are environmentally sustainable and well-suited for inclusion in modern dietary patterns. This review highlights the nutritional composition of millets, processing, their mechanisms of action in diabetes, obesity and osteoporosis management, and their potential role as functional foods in addressing the growing burden of lifestyle diseases. Emphasis is placed on promoting millets as affordable, accessible, and health-promoting dietary components for long-term disease prevention.

Keywords: millets; smart foods; diabetes mellitus; obesity; functional nutrition.
