Dr. Sowmya*, Dr. Varsha Kulkarni, Dr. Jyothi S. Murthy

ABSTRACT

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is called as phlebothrombosis. It is semisolid clot in the vein which has got high tendency to develop pulmonary embolism and sudden death. Risk factors include vericose vein, immobility, trauma, surgery, pregnancy, and oral contraceptives. It is contributed by Virchow’s Triad: stasis, hypercoagulability, and vein injury, presenting with swelling, pain, and warmthness. While conventional treatments like anticoagulation have limitations, Ayurveda offers a holistic perspective. In Ayurveda, DVT symptoms can be correlated with conditions such as Vatarakta, Siragranthi, Siragata Vata, and Raktavrita Vata. The core pathogenesis of these conditions is attributed to the vitiation of Vata and Rakta. Case Report: A 35-year-old female, with h/o DVT and Vericose veins, presented with a 15-year history of chronic, recurring left lower limb pain and swelling. These symptoms originated during postpartum period as an erythematous rash on the medial mid-leg, followed by rapid onset of diffuse limb edema, pain, and redness and was diagnosed as DVT. Despite initial partial resolution with conservative treatment, symptoms have persisted with episodic aggrevation. Recently since1 month, she developed progressive tender, indurated nodules on the anteriomedial aspect of upper calf, accompanied by localized erythema, leg heaviness, and exertional pain while walking. Methodology: Treatments like Sthanika Dhara, Manjistadi Kshara Basti, principles of Vatarakta, Siragranthi Chikitsa are adopted targeting Avarana, Srotodusti Result: Post-treatment evaluation revealed marginal improvement in symptoms, as determined by a comparative analysis of clinical signs and subjective symptoms. Conclusion - Ayurveda therapies like Sthanika Dhara, Kshara Basti can significantly manage symptoms of DVT.
