ANTIOXIDANT AND ANTICANCER ACTIVITY OF PLEUROTUS FLORIDA AND PLEUROTUS DJAMOR
*P. Vanathi
ABSTRACT Oyster mushrooms (genus Pleurotus) are widespread and comprise the most commonly cultivated edible mushrooms in the world. Species identification of oyster mushroom spawn based on cultural, morphological, and cultivated characteristics is time consuming and can be extraordinarily difficult, which has impeded mushroom breeding and caused economic loss for mushroom growers. Oyster mushroom is the second runner-up among commercially produced mushrooms due to its delicious taste, higher nutritional and medicinal properties. In this study, we investigated three extracts of two edible mushrooms Pleurotus florida (oyster mushroom), and Pleurotus djamor (grey oyster mushroom). Antioxidant activity was evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate (DPPH) radical scavenging, Reducing power, total phenolic and flavonoid content assays. The three extracts showed potential antioxidant activities with the maximum activity recorded for Pleurotus florida (IC50 µg/mL) = 52.24 to 22.2 % and Pleurotus djamor 77.69 to 37.97% for DPPH analysed. for reducing power 0.745±0.005 to 0.513± 0.004mg/g, Phenolic content 1.94±0.058 to 1.79±0.072 and flavonoid content 0.803±0.005 to 1.79±0.072mg/g for analysed. The highest cytotoxic activity was by the ethanol extract of P.florida fruiting bodies showed high cytotoxicity effect with half maximal inhibitory concentration 41% and P.djamor 46% HeLa, cell respectively. Keywords: Pleurotus florida, Pleurotus djamor, DPPH Scavenging Activity, Reducing Power, MTT assay, RPMI-1640He La cell line. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
