Abstract

A CONCEPTUAL REVIEW ON APARA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO MODERN PLACENTA

*Dr. Santosh Shankar Mali, Dr. Ankush Dattatraya Khedkar

ABSTRACT

Background: Apara, described in Ayurvedic classics under Garbha Sharira, is a vital temporary organ formed during pregnancy for the nourishment and sustenance of Garbha. Classical Acharyas including Charaka, Sushruta, Kashyapa, Vagbhata and commentators such as Dalhana and Indu have elaborated its origin, structure, function and clinical importance. In modern medical science, placenta is recognized as a fetomaternal organ essential for fetal growth and survival. A detailed conceptual correlation between Apara and modern placenta helps in understanding the scientific depth of Ayurvedic embryology. Materials and Methods: This study is a conceptual literary review based on classical Ayurvedic texts including Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Kashyapa Samhita, Ashtanga Sangraha and Ashtanga Hridaya along with their commentaries. Modern references from standard obstetrics and embryology textbooks were reviewed for correlation. Results: Ayurvedic texts describe Apara as originating from obstructed Artava/Rakta after conception and functioning as the medium of Garbha-poshana through Nabhinadi. It is connected to Matru Hridaya via Rasavaha Dhamani and is expelled after delivery. Modern science describes placenta as a discoid vascular organ formed from trophoblast and decidua basalis that performs nutritive, respiratory, excretory, endocrine and protective functions. Functional correlation between Apara and placenta is clearly evident, particularly in aspects of maternal-fetal circulation, nutrient transfer, hormonal maintenance of pregnancy and expulsion during third stage of labour. Conclusion: The Ayurvedic concept of Apara demonstrates a profound understanding of maternal-fetal physiology. Although classical descriptions use the terminology of Artava, Rasa and Rakta, their functional interpretation closely parallels modern placental science. Thus, Apara described in Ayurveda can be conceptually correlated with the modern placenta, highlighting the scientific foresight of ancient Acharyas.
