Abstract

A SINGLE CASE STUDY ON THE EFFICACY OF BALA DHATRYADI TAILA NASYA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF ARDITA (FACIAL PARALYSIS)

Dr. Ganesh Rajendrakumar Aru*, Dr. Kalpana Ganesh Aru

ABSTRACT

Background: Ardita, a Vata Nanatmaja Vyadhi in Ayurveda, closely correlates with idiopathic facial paralysis or Bell’s Palsy in modern medicine. It is characterized by the sudden onset of unilateral facial muscle weakness, leading to significant functional and psychosocial distress. Nasya Karma (nasal administration of medication) is a cornerstone treatment for Urdhva Jatrugata Vikara (disorders of the supraclavicular region). Aim: This single-case study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of Bala Dhatryadi Taila Nasya in managing a case of Ardita. Settings and Design: A 42-year-old male diagnosed with Ardita was treated with a structured Ayurvedic regimen, with Nasya as the primary intervention. Materials and Methods: The patient underwent a 7-day course of Bala Dhatryadi Taila Matra Nasya (8 drops/nostril) following standard Purva Karma (preparatory procedures) and PaschatKarma (post-procedural care). Concurrent internal medications included Dashamoola Kwatha and Ashwagandha Churna. Assessment was based on clinical parameters: lagophthalmos, deviation of the angle of the mouth, forehead wrinkling, cheek puffing, speech, and mastication. Results: Significant clinical improvement was observed over seven days. By Day 3, slight improvements were noted. By Day 5, facial asymmetry reduced markedly, and by Day 7, the patient demonstrated near-normal eye closure, symmetrical smile, and clear speech. Conclusion: This study suggests that Bala Dhatryadi Taila Nasya, as part of a comprehensive Ayurvedic protocol, is a potent and effective intervention for Ardita. The results underscore the importance of Nasya therapy in pacifying aggravated Vata Dosha at the site of pathology, facilitating rapid neuromuscular recovery.
