BEYOND THE NEEDLE: ADVANCES AND FUTURE PROSPECTS IN NEEDLE-FREE INJECTION SYSTEMS

ABSTRACT Conventional needle-based injections have long been central to parenteral drug delivery, but they are often linked with pain, needle phobia, infection risk, and poor patient compliance. To overcome these issues, the demand for painless and user-friendly delivery methods has driven the development of needle-free injection systems (NFIS). These devices use high-pressure gas, springs, or electronic mechanisms to propel liquid or powdered drugs through the skin without a needle. By removing the needle, NFIS minimise cross-contamination, improve comfort, and support easier self-administration, especially for chronic treatments like insulin and vaccines. Recent advances—including micro-jet injectors, micro-needle patches, and electronic precision systems—have enhanced delivery accuracy and control. Integration with digital tools, microfluidics, and nanotechnology is enabling morepersonalised and data-driven therapy. Although challenges such as formulation stability, device cost, and regulatory barriers remain, NFIS offer a promising step toward safer, precise, and nearly painless injections in modern healthcare.
