Abstract

EFFECT OF MONOTHERAPIES AND COMBINATIONAL THERAPIES OF KELOIDS AND HYPERTROPHIC SCARS RECURRENCE PREVENTION, SYMPTOMATIC RELIEF AND REMODELLING

Himaja Kumari Ponnada*, Momina Shaik, Sai Sri Kalam

ABSTRACT

Keloids and Hypertrophic scars illustrate fibroproliferative conditions which have a high recurrence rate are the main problem. This systematic review assesses the recurrence, efficiency, effectiveness and safety outcome by using different surgical and non-surgical therapies that include corticosteroids, immunomodulators, vitamin D, cryotherapy, lasers, intralesional drug combinations and postoperative radiotherapy. Among all the therapies, early multimodal interventions and combination therapies have the best outcomes when compared to other treatments like monotherapies. When the radiotherapy is performed after post-excision, it has the lowest recurrence rate, as in the case of scar parameters, combination intralesional regimens and laser assisted steroid therapies has significant improvements. This review emphasizes the weight of choosing treatment approaches based on keloid chronicity, lesion characteristics and anatomical position of the keloid.

Keywords: Keloids, Recurrence, monotherapies, combinational therapies.
