DRUGS FROM THE OCEAN: A REVIEW

ABSTRACT Drug discovery is the process of finding new potent drugs through series of experimental and clinical evaluation. Nature has been the store house for drugs for treating, curing and protecting against various diseases and toxicities for years originating from during the Vedas and Charakas in India. In other countries also drugs derived from native plants have been of interest for scientists. Drug discovery involves multiple disciplines i.e., Physiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Computational Biology, Pharmacology, Pharmacogenomics, Pharmacokinetics etc. All drugs and medicines available in the market in different parts of the world are either derived from natural sources or modified natural products or are artificially synthesized resembling some natural derivatives with potent therapeutic capacities. Several potent drugs have been derived from the vast living world of the ocean. And scientists around the globe are still working on the vast reserve of potent therapeutic natural products of the ocean and are hopeful to find some blessings for mankind in the form of some outstanding life saving remedies of many deadly diseases.
