MORPHOLOGY, TRADITIONAL USES AND PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITIES OF BEGONIA MALABARICA: AN OVERVIEW

ABSTRACT Herbal medicine has been the cornerstone of traditional healthcare in India, with medicinal plants recognized for their therapeutic potential due to the presence of diverse secondary metabolites. Begonia Malabarica Lam., a member of the family Begoniaceae, is traditionally employed for its antihyperglycemic, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties, as well as in the treatment of anemia, due to the presence of Alkaloids, Flavonoids, Phenolic compounds, Saponins, Quinines, Catechins, Carbohydrates, Proteins, Steroids, Resins, Tannins, and Thiols, and many other Secondary metabolites. This review consolidates and updates current knowledge on the phytochemical profile and pharmacological activities of Begonia Malabarica. By highlighting its bioactive constituents and therapeutic potential, the study provides a scientific basis for future pharmacological investigations and supports its traditional medicinal applications.
