Abstract

THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF IMMUNIZATION PRACTICES: IMPLICATIONS FOR CHILD HEALTH NURSING

*Mr. Vasanth Chellamuthu, Dr. Abdul Latif

ABSTRACT

Immunization remains one of the most impactful public health interventions, significantly reducing childhood morbidity and mortality through the prevention of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). While landmark achievements, such as the eradication of smallpox and near elimination of polio, have demonstrated the success of vaccination programs, challenges persist in the dynamic landscape of immunization practices. Innovations in vaccine science, such as mRNA technology, artificial intelligence integration, and needle-free delivery systems, hold great promise for addressing these challenges, alongside the development of personalized immunization schedules and combination vaccines. However, barriers such as vaccine hesitancy, misinformation, and global inequities in vaccine access — exacerbated during pandemics like COVID-19 — remain critical issues. Child health nurses continue to be pivotal in addressing these challenges by ensuring proper vaccine administration, educating families, counseling vaccine hesitant parents, and advocating for equitable access. With the adoption of digital health tools, telehealth outreach, and collaborative community-based approaches, nurses are also uniquely positioned to lead immunization campaigns and advance public health outcomes. To ensure future success, healthcare systems must empower child health nurses with education, leadership opportunities, and resources to spearhead vaccination programs and build public trust in immunization. This comprehensive approach to advancing vaccine science and addressing global challenges strengthens efforts to protect every child and achieve health equity worldwide.
