FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF BILAYER TABLETS OF SALBUTAMOL SULPHATE AND CETIRIZINE FOR THE TREATMENT OF ASTHMA
B.Dharshini Swapna* and D.Abhinay
ABSTRACT The present work aims at formulation and evaluation of Bilayered matrix tablet that contains immediate release layer of Cetirizine and sustained release layer of Salbutamol sulphate. The FTIR study was conducted using a combination of drugs along with excipients and polymers revealed that combination can be safely prepared. The pre compression parameters of powder blends for preparation of individual layers suggested good flowability and compressibility. Cetirizine immediate release layer was formulated by using Sodium Starch Glycolate, Croscarmellose sodium, Crospovidone as superdisintegrants and evaluated for physical parameter and disintegrating time. The optimized immediate release layer F1 with highest in vitro release of 99 % was selected. Salbutamol sulphate sustained release layer prepared by using HPMC K 100M, HPMC K4M, and Guar gum and evaluated for physical parameters along with in vitro drug release studies. The optimized formulation F2 which extend the Salbutamol Sulphate for a period of 8hrs was selected. All the Bilayer tablet formulations were subjected to pre-compression parameters. Finally Bilayer tablets were prepared by double compression of immediate release layer of Cetirizine and sustained release layer of Salbutamol Sulphate. Bilayer tablets were evaluated for hardness, thickness, weight variation, friability, in vitro dissolution studies. All the physical parameters were in acceptable limits of pharmacopeial specification. The in vitro dissolution studies were conducted by using pH 1.2 for immediate release layer and by pH 6.8 for sustained release layer.
