Abstract

UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF REFLUX OESOPHAGITIS (PITTAJA UDAVARTA) – A REVIEW

Dr. A.L.P.V. Swapnika*, Prof. Dr. Chitta Ranjan Das

ABSTRACT

Background & Objectives: Reflux esophagitis is one of the common yet most neglected medical conditions, where inflammation of esophageal lining occurs due to retrograde movement of stomach contents. In Ayurveda, parallels may be drawn to Pittaja Udavarta. Pittaja Udavarta is one of its types, where Pratiloma gati of Vata along with Pitta is observed in the Udara Pradesha. Methodology: By the literature search it can be seen that Udavarta has been mentioned as both an independent disease and also as a Lakshana of various diseases. As per the classics, Udavarta can be managed by Snehana, Swedana, Virechana and Vasti. Acharya Bhela has mentioned the treatment protocol as Vamana, Virechana and Vasti for Kapha, Pitta and Vata respectively. In Pittaja Udavarta, Virechana can be aptly implied considering the Dosha Avastha and Sthanika Chikitsa. Conclusion & Relevance: Pitta dosha is responsible for digestion, transformation and metabolism in our body. Udavarta is a condition where retrograde movement of Vata is noted. Virechana dravyas acts by irritating the intestinal mucosa, thereby helps in removal of all the vitiated contents. Reflux Esophagitis is a condition seen commonly in aged, stress and anxiety persons. This can be prevented by simple lifestyle modifications such as diet, weight, elevating head during sleep time, avoiding tight clothing and smoking, etc.

Keywords: Pittaja Udavarta, Reflux Oesophagitis, Vamana, Virechana.
