AYURVEDIC DETOX AND SCIENTIFIC INSIGHTS: THE RELEVANCE OF LANGHAN IN TODAY’S HEALTH PRACTICES
Komalben M. Hadiya*, Vd. Mahesh Chand Gupta
ABSTRACT Introduction: Ayurveda, the traditional Indian medical system, focuses on holistic well-being through tailored therapeutic methods. Among its key concepts, Langhan serves as an important technique for detoxification and achieving metabolic equilibrium. In today's healthcare landscape, where issues like obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome are widespread, Langhan provides a natural and preventive strategy. This research investigates the significance of Langhan in modern medical practices, concerning autophagy, intermittent fasting, and the regulation of metabolism. Methods: A review of literature was undertaken utilizing Ayurvedic texts and recent studies on fasting and metabolic wellness. A comparative analysis was carried out between Ayurvedic Langhan techniques and current fasting practices, such as intermittent fasting. Research findings regarding the impact of fasting on metabolic disorders were examined to identify links between traditional and contemporary methods. Results: Research shows that Langhan is consistent with contemporary scientific concepts related to autophagy and intermittent fasting. Evidence indicates that regulated fasting boosts cellular repair processes, decreases inflammation, and enhances metabolic flexibility. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe Langhan as a practice to harmonize Agni, eliminate Ama, and restore balance in the body, which aligns with current insights into the metabolic advantages of fasting. Furthermore, Langhan has proven effective in managing issues such as obesity, diabetes, and inflammatory conditions. Discussion: Unlike conventional medicine, which often prioritizes symptom management, Ayurvedic Langhan provides a holistic, preventive approach by addressing imbalances before they lead to chronic conditions. Personalized fasting methods, based on Prakriti and Dosha imbalances, offer tailored solutions rather than a universal approach seen in contemporary fasting trends. Integrating Ayurvedic Langhan into modern healthcare could create a complementary model combining traditional wisdom with evidence-based research. Conclusion: Langhan remains a timeless therapeutic practice with scientifically validated benefits for metabolic health. Bridging Ayurveda with modern fasting research can offer sustainable wellness strategies, highlighting its potential in global integrative medicine. Further, public health initiatives incorporating Ayurvedic detox principles may help mitigate lifestyle-related disorders such as obesity, diabetes etc. Keywords: Ayurveda, Langhan, Intermittent Fasting, Detoxification.
