AROMATHERAPY: THE NEUROSCIENCE BEHIND THE SMELL
Sachin Waghere*, Pornima Bhagwat, Nisha Jadhav, Ayush Pednekar, Ms. Minal Kulkarni
ABSTRACT Aromatherapy is a complementary therapeutic practice that employs essential oils extracted from plants such as flowers, leaves, bark, and roots to promote physical and psychological well-being. Rooted in ancient traditions from India, Egypt, and China, it has gained increasing attention in modern healthcare as a holistic approach to stress management, pain relief, and wellness. Essential oils can be administered through inhalation, topical application, or diffusion, where they interact with the limbic system of the brain and cutaneous receptors to elicit diverse physiological responses. This review provides an overview of the origins, classifications, mechanisms of action, and therapeutic benefits of aromatherapy. Commonly used essential oils, including lavender, eucalyptus, sandalwood, lemon, bergamot, and tuberose, are examined for their pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic, and anxiolytic properties.Evidence from recent preclinical and clinical studies is discussed, highlighting applications in stress reduction, sleep enhancement, pain management, and supportive care in chronic illnesses. Despite its widespread use, aromatherapy faces challenges related to lack of standardization, variable quality of essential oils, and limited large-scale clinical trials. Safety concerns such as allergic reactions and skin sensitivity also warrant caution. Future research should focus on well-designed clinical studies and regulatory standardization to validate its therapeutic potential. This review emphasizes the importance of bridging traditional knowledge with modern pharmacology to promote the safe and effective integration of aromatherapy into mainstream healthcare.
