Abstract

A LITERATURE REVIEW ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SCHOOL BASED INTERVENTIONS IN PREVENTING OBESITY AND PROMOTING PHYSICAL FITNESS IN ADOLESCENTS AGED 10-18 YEARS

Dronadula Borraiah*

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this literature review is to analyze the effectiveness of physical fitness interventions in schools in the UK in preventing obesity. Numerous studies show that physical activity is an effective way to prevent cardiovascular diseases and mental illnesses and to improve physical fitness. Regular physical fitness reduces risk factors for diseases such as diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that children and adolescents engage in MVPA for at least 60 minutes daily. Despite the need for regular physical activity, PA levels have begun to decline as new technological devices such as cell phones, computers, tablets, video games and social media have entered our lives. Various studies have shown that inactivity can lead to obesity and reduced cardiovascular fitness and increase the risk of cholesterol and blood pressure in children and adolescents. A comprehensive review of the articles shows that at least one of the results demonstrated notable improvement. Research into the program shows that school-based interventions had a better overall success rate than programs that focused on physical activity. School-based interventions with greater emphasis on the content, quality, duration, and priority of physical activity can have a significant impact on obesity prevention and fitness promotion.
