ABSTRACT

The study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of PGRs like ABA (Abscisic acid), SA (Salicylic acid), Putrescine and GABA (Gamma amino butyric acid) on carbohydrate metabolism under water stress conditions on medicinally important oil yielding plant Simarouba glauca DC. One year old seedlings of S. glauca DC. were subjected to water stress for 4, 8, 12 and 16 days, regularly watered plants were served as control. The foliar sprays of 50 ppm SA and 10 ppm Putriscine, GABA and ABA were applied to stressed plants. The starch content in leaf, stem and root was considerably reduced with increasing water stress treatment. The foliar application of growth regulators SA, Putrescine, GABA and ABA maintained the level of the starch under stressed condition but it was decreased in stressed unsprayed leaf, stem and root as compared to untreated control plants. The reducing and total sugar content of leaf, stem and root was significantly increased with increasing water stress treatment. The foliar application of SA, Putrescine, GABA and ABA to water stressed plants results in an increase in total and reducing sugar content of leaf, stem and root as compared to unsprayed stressed control. The activity of enzyme invertase was increased with increasing water stress treatment than unstressed control plants. These results indicates that ABA, SA, Putrescine and GABA plays a vital role in drought tolerance.

Keywords: Carbohydrates, Invertase enzyme, ABA, SA, Putrescine and GABA.
