ABSTRACT In Ayurveda, medicinal plants hold a central place, as this traditional Indian system of medicine emphasizes the therapeutic properties of herbs and natural resources. The genus Thunbergia, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, includes nearly 100 species consisting of annuals, perennials, and shrubs. Among them, Thunbergia erecta (synonym: Meyenia erecta), commonly known as Bush Clockvine, is recognized for its significant medicinal importance. It is a robust, woody shrub native to tropical Africa, growing up to about 6 feet in height and width, and is characterized by its deep purple flowers with a contrasting yellow throat. The purple colour of its flowers is attributed to anthocyanins, pigments responsible for producing shades of blue, purple, violet, magenta, and yellow in various plant parts such as flowers, fruits, and leaves. Phytochemical investigations of T. erecta leaves reveal the presence of diverse bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, saponins, and triterpenoids, which contribute to its pharmacological relevance. The purpose of this review is to present a concise account of Thunbergia erecta along with other species of the genus, highlighting their scientific classification, morphological features, geographical distribution, and pharmacological activities. Keywords: Thunbergia erecta, Pharmacological properties, Medicinal uses, Phytoconstituents. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
