Abstract

DETOXIFICATION OF AFLATOXIN B1 BY PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL METHODS

Bedi P. S.* and Agarwal R. K.

ABSTRACT

In present study an attempt has been made to detoxify aflatoxin B 1 in Basmati rice by physical and chemical methods. Aflatoxin ( AFB 1) contaminated rice containing 20000-30000 ppbAFB1 were directly exposed to sunlight for continuously for 5hr in the month of June at temperature varying from 37°C to 42°C.The results showed that exposure to direct sunlight reduced the AFB1 content by 10-17%. The study revealed that exposure of contaminated feed to direct sunlight is helpful in reducing the AFB1 content. In another experiment Basmati rice were taken as substrate media were divided in to four groups. First nontreated ( Control ), propionic acid treated ( PA ), monoprop treated ( MP ) and activated charcoal treated ( AC ). Propionic acid was used @ 0.025, 0.05 & 0.10 µg/g, Monoprop @ 0.50, 1.00 & 2.00 µg/g at the time of innoculation. There was 100% inhibition of AFB1 production at 0.05 and 0.10 µg/g and 60% at 0.025 µg/g in PA group. Whereas the maximum concentration of AFB1 was reduced to 50% by monoprop at 2.00 µg/g. However the levels of activated charcoal used were 1.0%, 2.0% & 4.0% for detoxification of AFB1. The results showed reduction in AFB1 concentration was 40-46%, 75-98% and 72-95% respectively. The order of effectiveness in detoxifying the aflatoxin contaminated samples was PA > AC > MP.

Keywords: Aflatoxin B1, Aspergillus flavus, detoxification, propionic acid, activated charcoal and sunlight.
