STUDY ON ASSESSMENT OF DRUG UTILIZATION IN THE ORTHOPAEDICS DEPARTMENT OF PRIVATE HOSPITAL

*Miss. M. Archanaa, Ms Srividhya G

ABSTRACT

The main aim is to study the drug utilization in the department of orthopaedics in a private hospital. The study begins with the selection of the patients based on the inclusion criteria followed by the collection of all the baseline parameters of the patients, demographic details, medical and medication history, family history, laboratory data, radiographic data and drugs prescribed in patients. In our study, pain relievers were the most commonly used medications, followed by infection-fighting drugs and stomach-related medications. These drugs were used more often by adults. To reduce the risk of bacteria becoming resistant to infection- fighting drugs, doctors should prescribe them carefully and only when needed. Broad- spectrum infection-fighting drugs should not be prescribed without lab tests toconfirm their necessity. Ethical guidelines should be followed to ensure medications are used wisely, and the number of drugs per prescription should be minimized by prescribing only what is necessary. OBJECTIVES1. To identify the prescribing patterns of various drugs used in hospitalized patients of orthopaedics department.2. To identify the prescribing patterns of drugs in different age groups of patients getting admitted in orthopaedics department.

Keywords: Inpatients, observational study, prescription drugs, Drug utilization review.
