EXPLORING THE ROLE OF NUTRITION IN EMOTIONAL REGULATION AND MENTAL HEALTH: A MULTIDISCIPLINARY REVIEW
Dr. Rujuta Joshi*
ABSTRACT Introduction: The link between nutrition and mental health has gained growing interest, focusing on how dietary patterns influence emotional regulation. This review explores biological, psychological, sociocultural, and Ayurvedic pathways through which nutrition impacts mental well-being, emphasizing integrative frameworks for emotional stability and mental health care. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted across psychiatry, psychology, nutritional sciences, and Ayurveda. Key studies on the gut-brain axis, neurotransmitter synthesis, traditional food classifications (Sattvic, Rajasic, Tamasic), and sociocultural factors were analyzed to provide a holistic perspective. Results: Nutrition affects mental health viamultiple mechanisms. Biologically, the gut-brain axis and neurotransmitter function are influenced by nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and B vitamins. Ayurveda highlights Agni (digestive fire), food’s impact on Manasika doshas (psychological factors). Psychologically, emotional eating and comfort foods worsen mental health, while mindful and Sattvic eating promote balance. Sociocultural influences, including traditional diets and socioeconomic factors, also shape mental health outcomes. Nutritional psychiatry and Ayurvedic dietary therapy offer complementary approaches to managing anxiety and depression. Discussion: Despite promising findings, challenges like methodological inconsistencies and lifestyle confounders remain. Integrating biomedical and traditional systems is vital for advancing research and clinical practice. Conclusion: This review underscores nutrition’s vital role—including Ayurvedic principles—in emotional regulation and mental health, advocating continued integrative research and innovative clinical approaches.
