Abstract

ORAL MANIFESTATIONS AND PREVALENCE OF DENTAL CARIES IN HAEMODIALYSIS PATIENTS AT BIDAR DISTRICT, KARNATAKA

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The kidneys play an essential role in the maintenance of haemostasis by their capacity to remove metabolic waste products, electrolytes and water from the body. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a worldwide public health problem. According to World Health Organization (WHO) Global Burden of Disease Project, chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is the 12th leading cause of death and 17th leading cause of disability in the world. Statistics show that 90% of the patients suffering from chronic renal failure face oral health related problems. Objectives: To assess the “Oral manifestations and prevalence of dental caries in Haemodialysis patients at Bidar district, Karnataka. Material and methods: A cross sectional study wascarried out on 110 patients undergoing haemodialysis for the duration of one month in Bidar district, Karnataka. A specially prepared questionnaire was used to record the demographic, medical data and oral hygiene practices. Oral manifestations and dental caries was assessed using WHO assessment form 1997. Results: The mean age of the patients was 43.99 ± 12.80 years. Majority of subjects who were undergoing haemodialysis had systemic disease such as diabetes, hypertension etc. The prevalence of dental caries was 96.8%. Conclusion: This special population has high prevalence of dental caries and poor oral hygiene which needs periodic oral health education and intervention.
