ABSTRACT Background: Sahacharadi Taila, a classical Ayurvedic therapeutic oil, is widely utilised to treat diseases linked to elevated Vata dosha, comprising neuromuscular and musculoskeletal ailments such as sciatica, joint stiffness & varicose veins. Despite its medicinal prevalence, there exists limited scientific evidence that links its efficacy to its chemical composition. Objective: This study aims to identify and analyze the bioactive compounds present in Sahacharadi Taila using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and to correlate its chemical profile with its established pharmacological actions & therapeutic applications in Ayurveda. Method: The physicochemical evaluation and GC-MS analysis were conducted on Sahacharadi Taila. The organoleptic qualities and physicochemical parameters, including saponification value, iodine value, & acid value, were evaluated according to the norms of the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia. GC-MS analysis was conducted with a Shimadzu GCMS-QP 2010SE system, and the chemical contents were determined by comparison with the NIST database. Result: Total of 25 bioactive substances were found, including lauric acid, eugenol, hexadecanoic acid, and oleic acid. These compounds exhibited pharmacological characteristics, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, and emollient activities. Physicochemical analyses validated the oil's purity, with parameters such as saponification value (191.93) and iodine value (108.49) according to Ayurvedic ethical standards. Conclusion: The study validates the medicinal efficacy of Sahacharadi Taila by correlating its chemical composition with its traditional use in Ayurveda. The integration of contemporary analytical methodologies with Ayurvedic principles underscores its efficacy as a treatment for Vata-related ailments & endorses its wider utilisation in integrative and alternative medicine.
