Dr. Dharti Joshi*, Dr. Dilip Jani and Dr. Ketki Aurangabadkar

ABSTRACT

Background: Triphala, a classical Ayurvedic formulation comprised of three fruits, has been extensively mentioned across Nighantu texts. Despite its long-standing therapeutic use, variations in its nomenclature, properties, and indications across different Nighantus remain underexplored. A critical review of Triphala in Nighantu literature can provide valuable insights for its application in contemporary practice. Materials and Methods: This review analyzed 24 Ayurvedic Nighantus to collect information related to Triphala, focusing on its synonyms, properties, therapeutic actions and therapeutic indications. The collected data were systematically organized and critically evaluated to assess the consistency and variations across texts. Results: Triphala was found to be mentioned in all the reviewed Nighantus, with a total of 17 synonyms describing its various characteristics. Its properties, such as Rasa, Guna, Veerya and Vipaka, were largely consistent across texts, aligning with its traditional uses for Rasayana, Netra Roga, Amapachana, Prameha, Vibandha etc. Discussion: The review highlights the rich heritage and consistency of Triphala within the Nighantu literature, supporting its clinical relevance across eras. The observed variations underscore its adaptability for different therapeutic needs. The well-documented properties and indications justify further pharmacological and clinical studies for evidence-based validations. Conclusion: Triphala’s comprehensive depiction across the Nighantus confirms its significance as a core Ayurvedic formulation. This critical review provides a foundation for future research and supports the clinical application of Triphala in Ayurvedic practice, aligning ancient knowledge with modern scientific inquiry.

Keywords: Triphala, Haritaki, Amalaki, Bibhitaki, Nighantu.
