BHRINGARAJA (ECLIPTA ALBA(L.) HASSK) - A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW
Dhaval Prajapati* and Dr. Dharmendra Jani
ABSTRACT Introduction: Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba (L.) Hassk) is a widely used medicinal herb in Ayurveda, known for its Rasayana and Keshya properties. It balances Pitta and Vata Doshas and is cited across classical texts like Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya for treating conditions such as Pandu, Kamala, Khalitya, Palitya, Kasa, and Shwasa. Methods: A descriptive review was conducted based on Ayurvedic classical texts such as Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya, Bhavaprakasha, Sharangadhara Samhita, and various Nighantus, combined with modern ethnopharmacological and botanical evidence. The synonyms, classifications, Rasapanchaka, and therapeutic actions (Karma) were extracted and cross-referenced from ancient sources and supported by pharmacognostic and phytochemical data. Results: Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba (L.) Hassk) is classified under various Varga and described with numerous synonyms such as Markav, Keshranjan, and Angarak. It is known for Tikta-Katu Rasa, Ushna Virya, and actions like Rasayana, Chakshushya, Yakrituttejak, and Keshya. Its use in liver disorders, skin diseases, and respiratory conditions is supported by classical texts and modern studies confirming its hepatoprotective, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. Discussion: The wide citation of Bhringaraja (Eclipta alba (L.) Hassk) in classical and modern sources confirms its therapeutic importance. Its phytoconstituents justify traditional uses, and awareness of substitutes like Wedelia calendulacea is essential to prevent adulteration. Further research may expand its application in integrative medicine. Keywords: Bhringaraja, Eclipta alba (L.) Hassk, Keshya, Rasayana, Herbal medicine. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
