*Kaushik Nakum and Dharmendra Jani

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Kapikachhu (Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC.), widely used in Ayurveda, is known for its powerful aphrodisiac, neuroprotective, and strength-promoting properties. Rich in L-DOPA, alkaloids, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds, it enhances testosterone levels, improves sperm count, builds muscle mass, and boosts physical endurance earning it the nickname “athlete’s friend.” The herb also supports mental health by improving mood and reducing symptoms of depression. Traditionally used to treat conditions like Parkinsonism, diabetes, arthritis, and menstrual disorders, Kapikachhu is a versatile herb with strong grounding in both classical Ayurvedic texts and modern research. It also contributes to soil health as a nitrogen-fixing legume, supporting sustainable agriculture. Material and method: This study involved a literature review of various samhita, various Nighantu and including PubMed, Scopus, and AYUSH Research Portal. Discussion and conclusion: There is significant concordance between classical uses and contemporary pharmacological evidence. In Ayurvedic Kapikacchu with Vrishya (aphrodisiac), Balya (strength-promoting), Brimhana (nutritive), and Rasayana (rejuvenating) properties. It is primarily classified under Vidaryadi Gana and Balya Mahakashaya. Its utility in treating Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, and male infertility underlines the need for further clinical validation. Integration of Ayurvedic formulations of Kapikachhu with modern clinical protocols may enhance its therapeutic utility, particularly in neurodegenerative and reproductive disorders.
