ABSTRACT The mouth cavity is home to a wide variety of bacterial species, some of which can cause oral ailments. Herbal treatments are good substitutes for chemical oral care products, especially those that include antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. The purpose of this study was to formulate and evaluate herbal mouthwash with extracts from the leaves of Ocimum tenuiflorum (Tulsi) and peels of Punica granatum (pomegranate). The extracts were made by decoction (water) and Soxhlet extraction (methanol), respectively. The agar well diffusion method was used to evaluate the antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. The formulation contained mint oil, sugar, SLS, sodium benzoate, PEG 400, methanol, and water. Among the formulations, F3 demonstrated acceptable physicochemical qualities (color, odor, pH, viscosity, and phase stability) as well as higher antibacterial effectiveness and homogeneity. The results suggest that this herbal mouthwash could serve as an effective agent for maintaining oral hygiene. Keywords: Punica granatum, Ocimum tenuiflorum, gingivitis, antibacterial activity, herbal mouthwash. [Download Article] [Download Certifiate] |
