AN AYURVEDIC APPROACH TO AMLAPITTA TREATMENT: A CASE STUDY
Dr. Lekhraj Verma*, Dr. Raj Shikha and Dr. Surendra Kumar Sharma
ABSTRACT Introduction: Ayurveda emphasizes the pivotal role of Agni (digestive/metabolic fire) in maintaining health. Lifestyle disruptions, dietary errors, and stress can impair Agni, leading to Ama accumulation and Pitta aggravation in the gastrointestinal system. This condition manifests as Amlapitta, resembling GERD. Aim and Objectives: This case study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Ayurveda’s Shamana Chikitsa (palliative treatment) in alleviating symptoms of Amlapitta through restoration of digestive balance. Materials and Methods: A 32-year-old male with a two-year history of indigestion, sour belching, heartburn, abdominal heaviness, constipation, distension, and weakness was assessed per Ayurvedic parameters. The patient had Vata–Pitta constitution, irregular digestion (Vishamagni), rough bowel tendencies (Krura koshta), and presence of Ama. A 20-day treatment protocol was administered: Avipattikara Churna (3 g before meals), Pittantaka Yoga (1 g before meals), Maha Shankha Vati (2 tablets after meals) All remedies were taken with lukewarm water. Observation and Results: Post-treatment evaluation revealed significant symptom relief: indigestion diminished, sour belching resolved, heartburn and weakness notably improved, and abdominal distension fully subsided. Conclusion: This case highlights the potential efficacy of Ayurvedic Shamana Chikitsa in managing Amlapitta by correcting digestive imbalance, reducing Ama, and pacifying aggravated Pitta. The findings support further clinical investigation of these traditional formulations. Keywords: Amlapitta, Pachaka Pitta, Agni, Gastroesophagal reflux disease.
