A SURVEY ON THE INDIGENOUS USES OF STHALAVRIKSHAS IN THE SELECTED TEMPLES OF TIRUCHIRAPPALLI DISTRICT, TAMIL NADU, INDIA
M. Manoranjitham*, T. Hemalatha and R. Surya
ABSTRACT In India, the worship of sthalavrikshas, or sacred trees, is very important in temples. In Tamil Nadu, nearly every temple is linked to a specific tree or plant that holds deep historical and mythical meanings. This connection enriches the spiritual journey for devotees. Sthalavrikshas are not just regular trees; they have existed in temple grounds long before the temples were built. Recently, researchers explored Tiruchirappalli district to catalog these sacred trees. From August 2023 to February 2024, we visited 41 ancient temples and discovered 20 different species of sthalavrikshas in the area. Local communities highly value these trees, believing they bring blessings of health and prosperity. In addition to their religious significance, sthalavrikshas serve as important genetic reserves, reflecting cultural heritage and aiding ecological conservation. Worshiping sthalavrikshas is a time-honoured tradition that weaves together myths, beliefs, and stories. This rich practice helps people respect and protect these trees, maintaining a unique bond between nature and spirituality that has persisted for generations.
