A REVIEW ON IPOMOEA OBSCURA

ABSTRACT Ipomoea obscura (L.) Ker Gawl., a widely distributed plant belonging to the Convolvulaceae family, has garnered significant attention in traditional medicine systems and scientific research due to its diverse ethnomedicinal uses and promising phytochemical profile. This comprehensive review aims to synthesize existing literature on I. obscura, encompassing its botanical description, traditional applications, phytochemistry, and reported pharmacological activities. The review highlights its historical use in various folk remedies for ailments such as Phytochemical investigations have revealed the presence of a wide array of bioactive compounds, including which are likely responsible for its observed therapeutic effects. Furthermore, recent studies have demonstrated its properties, providing scientific validation for its traditional uses. Despite significant progress, further rigorous research is needed to elucidate the complete phytochemical spectrum, mechanisms of action, and to conduct preclinical and clinical trials to confirm its safety and efficacy for therapeutic development. This review consolidates current knowledge, identifies research gaps, and underscores the potential of I. obscura as a valuable source of novel therapeutic agents.
