STUDY ON DRUG UTILIZATION OF ANTIBIOTICS IN A TERTIARY CARE TEACHING HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT Background: Antibiotics were considered as the most significant discovery of 20th Century. Antibiotics play a significant role in treating bacterial infections. Drug utilization studies promote the responsible use of medications and help to enhance prescribing habits. Aim: The study aim to analyze the antibiotic utilization in a tertiary care teaching hospital. Method: This was a cross- sectional study which was carried out in various departments for 3 months. The study enrolled 300 participants based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The collected data was used to study drug utilization of antibiotics. The results were analyzed using SPSS version 20.0 software. Results: Out of 300 patients 62% were males, most are from 58-67 years. The commonly utilized antibiotics category was Beta lactam antibiotics (59.7%) with Moxclav being the most used. Conclusion: This study would contribute valuable insights into rational antibiotic usage and foster a culture of safe medication practices within healthcare facilities.
