ABSTRACT

Objective: The purpose of this article is to explain and present a panoramic review of Ilaj bit tadbeer (Regimental Therapy) in the Unani system of medicine. Background: The Unani system of medicine is practiced across the world under the name Unani Tibb. Hippocrates conceptualized the core philosophy of this system. After him, Arab and Persian scholars enriched this system considerably. In Unani medicine, treatment methodology is based on four approaches viz, Ilaj bil Tadbeer (Regimental therapy), Ilaj bil ghiza (Dietotherapy), Ilaj bil dawa (Pharmacotherapy), and Ilaj bil yad (surgery), Ilaj bil Tadbeer in USM is one of the four treatment methods which involve caring of sick and maintaining overall health through specific procedure, tools, and equipment. It is one of the most popular methods of treatment, practiced by ancient Unani scholars since antiquity. Cupping, leeching, venesection, enema, massage, exercise, fomentation, and Turkish bath are very popular regimes, among 36 regimental therapies mentioned by Ibn-e-Sina, and can be used independently or without medicines. Material and Methods: The authors have gone through classical Unani medical textbooks like Al- Qanoon, and Zakheera Khawarzam Shahi, in addition to other published literature related to the comprehensive review of Ilaj bit tadbeer. Conclusion: In the present scenario, only a few scientific studies on certain Unani regimens have been carried out to validate them. Detailed studies regarding mechanism of action and well-designed standard operating procedures of regimenal procedures, supported by scientific studies to open new therapeutic avenues and worldwide acceptance would help in the safe and efficient application of these regimens.

Keywords: Unani system of medicine, Ilaj bil Tadbeer, Regimenal therapy.
