*Smitha G. S. and Prof. (Dr.) D. B. Vaghela

ABSTRACT

In Ayurveda there are two basic principles of treatments which are Shodhana Chikilsa and Shamana Chikilsa. Shodhana Chikilsa is known as Panchakarma. According to Acharya Sushruta Raktamokshana(bloodletting) also coming under Shodhana therapy, which is helpful in removing the vitiated Doshas; Vata, Pitta and Kapha. ‘Jaloukavacharana’ is considered as the most effective and easiest method of bloodletting. Dosha predominance of Netra is Pitta and Rakta, and also Pitta has an Ashrayaashrayi Bandha with Rakta it should consider that there must be an involvement of Rakta Dosha also in Netra Rogas. In Sushruta Samhita there is about 12 types of Jalouka, categorized as Savisha(Poisonous) and Nirvisha(non-poisonous). In Sushruta Samhita Jaloukavacharaniya Adhyaya, there is collection, preservation and procedure are explained. Also, in Uttarasthana of both Ashtanga Hridaya and Sushruta Samhita, we can get ideas of how Jalouka plays its role in different Netrarogas like Raktaja Abhishyanda, Pakshmashata, Kukunaka, Kshataja Shukra and Kacha. Jalouka is acting upon Pitta and Rakta by sucking out the vitiated Raktadosha from the site. So, it can be concluded like Jalouka has a very important role in Netrachikilsa.
