ABSTRACT

Herbal medicine has a long history as the oldest form of healthcare, with an estimated 80% of the population in developing countries relying on traditional plant-based medicines. Natural plant products also serve as valuable prototypes for new drug development. The stomach, a vital organ, is susceptible to peptic ulcers, which are excoriated segments of the gastrointestinal mucosa, primarily in the stomach or duodenum. Peptic ulcer disease affects approximately 10% of adults in the USA, with higher hospitalization and mortality rates in the elderly. The pathophysiology involves an imbalance between mucosal defense factors and injurious agents. This project investigated the anti-ulcer and anthelmintic activities of the ethanolic extract of Ensete Superbum seeds. Preliminary phytochemical screening revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, sterols, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, triterpenoids, and proteins. Flavonoids, tannins, and triterpenoids are suggested as the primary constituents responsible for the anti-ulcer activity. Modern ulcer treatment aims to both potentiate the defensive system and reduce acid secretion. This Study confirms the traditional use of Ensete Superbum seed extract in managing peptic ulcers. Further research is necessary to isolate and characterize the active phytochemical constituents, conduct pharmacological studies on chronic ulcer healing, investigate potential side effects, and elucidate the mode of action to pave the way for new anti-ulcer therapies.
