Dr. Bishnupriya Mohanty*, Praveen Kamatar and Prof. Dr. Sangram Keshari Das
ABSTRACT Paripatyadhi Kwath is a classical Ayurvedic medicine that’s mainly used to treat digestive issues like diarrhea (Atisara), dysentery, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This formulation is made using a special combination of medicinal herbs known for their powerful properties like fighting germs (antimicrobial), reducing swelling (anti-inflammatory), and improving digestion. In this article, we’ll look into its background and historical importance, what it's made of (its composition), how it works on the body (its pharmacological properties), how it's prepared in the traditional way, and why it still holds value in today’s modern medical world. The article also talks about the scientific research done to support its use and how it can possibly be used more widely in the future for treating various health problems. Introduction Ayurveda, one of the oldest medical systems in the world, has described many herbal remedies to treat different health problems. Among these, Kwath (herbal decoctions) are very popularbecause they help pull out strong, active ingredients from the herbs, which makes them work faster and get absorbed better by the body. Paripatyadhi Kwath is one such classical remedy that is especially used to treat problems like diarrhea, dysentery, and other gut-related inflammations. It helps balance the Pitta and Kapha doshas when they get disturbed, which brings back the health of the intestines and improves digestion. Today, digestive problems are a major health issue around the world, affecting millions of people every year. Modern allopathic medicines like antibiotics and other anti-diarrheal drugs may give quick relief, but they also come with side effects like antibiotic resistance and imbalance in the gut’s good bacteria. Ayurveda, on the other hand, gives a more natural and holistic way to treat these issues. Remedies like Paripatyadhi Kwath are safe and effective, and can be a great alternative to chemical-based medicines. Historical Context of Paripatyadhi Kwath Paripatyadhi Kwath is mentioned in ancient Ayurvedic books like the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita. These old texts strongly highlight the importance of herbal decoctions for treating problems like Atisara (diarrhea), Pravahika (dysentery), and Grahani (irritable bowel syndrome or IBS). This medicine has been used in India for hundreds of years and is still suggested by Ayurvedic doctors today because it works well in improving gut health and bringing the digestive system back to normal.
