VIRUDHA ANNA (INCOMPATIBLE FOOD COMBINATIONS) AND FOOD POISONING: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

ABSTRACT Virudha Anna, or incompatible food combinations, is a critical concept in Ayurveda that describes dietary practices leading to toxin formation, impaired digestion, and systemic disorders, including food poisoning. Modern science also recognizes that improper food pairings can cause microbial contamination, enzymatic interference, and metabolic disturbances. This article provides a detailed review of Virudha Anna from both Ayurvedic and contemporary perspectives, analysing its role in food poisoning, mechanisms of toxicity, clinical manifestations, and preventive strategies.
