ABSTRACT Herbal medicine has been a cornerstone of traditional and modern healthcare, offering bioactive compounds with immense therapeutic potential. However, the hydrophilic nature of these compounds often limits their absorption and bioavailability, hindering optimal therapeutic efficacy. Recent advancements in phytosome technology have overcome this challenge, significantly boosting bioavailability and absorption. By complexing phytochemicals with phospholipids, Phytosomes enhance solubility, permeability, and therapeutic outcomes, unlocking the full potential of herbal medicine. Phytochemicals possess remarkable biological properties and health benefits, but their therapeutic potential is hindered by solubility, stability, and bioavailability issues. Phytosomes, an innovative delivery system, have transformed phytochemical applications, optimizing absorption, bioavailability, and efficacy. By combining phytochemicals with phospholipids, Phytosomes exhibit enhanced therapeutic potency against diverse conditions, including COVID-19, pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, migraine, arthritis, obesity, and cancer. The market offers a range of phytosome-based products, leveraging herbal extracts and phytochemicals with significant therapeutic potential. This comprehensive review explores phytosome technology, covering preparation methods, properties, advantages, characterization, and applications, while highlighting recent research breakthroughs and future directions.
