ABSTRACT Background: Pregnancy and the postpartum period involve significant physiological and psychological changes. Although often viewed as a joyful time, this phase can also make women vulnerable to emotional disturbances, particularly Postpartum Depression (PPD) a major depressive disorder that affects maternal well-being and infant development. In Ayurveda, PPD is recognized as Sootika Unmada, linked to imbalances in Vata dosha and disturbances of Manasika doshas. Objective: To explore postpartum mental health issues in women and assess the effectiveness of Ayurvedic principles and therapies in the management of postpartum depression. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted, drawing upon classical Ayurvedic texts, contemporary research articles, and published clinical trials focused on Sootika Unmada (postpartum depression). The study emphasizes Ayurvedic pathophysiology and traditional therapeutic approaches. Results: According to Ayurveda, Sootika Unmada arises from Rasa Dhatu depletion and Vata aggravation following childbirth, manifesting as both emotional and physical symptoms. Ayurvedic interventions like Abhyanga (therapeutic oil massage) and Takradhara (medicated buttermilk therapy) are beneficial in managing PPD. These treatments help calm the nervous system, regulate hormonal balance, enhance circulation, and promote neurotransmitter activity thereby supporting mental and emotional stability. Conclusion: Ayurvedic understanding and interventions offer a holistic approach to postpartum depression by addressing its root causes. Integrating Ayurvedic therapies into postpartum care may help improve maternal mental health. Keywords: Postpartum Depression, Sootika Unmada, Women’s Mental Health, Vata Dosha.
