Abstract

PREPARATION AND EVALUATION OF MOUTH DISSOLVING TABLET OF ALBUTEROL SULPHATE

Tarun Singh* and Vijeta Bhattacharya

ABSTRACT

Albuterol sulphate is a bronchodilator widely used for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, its oral bioavailability is limited due to extensive first-pass metabolism. Mouth dissolving tablets (MDTs) offer a promising alternative, providing rapid onset of action and improved patient compliance. This study aimed to develop and evaluate MDTs of albuterol sulphate using superdisintegrants. MDTs were prepared using direct compression method, employing varying concentrations of superdisintegrants such Polyplasdone-XL (2-5%), Ac-Di-Sol (2-5%), and Primojel (2-5%) as superdisintegrant. The prepared tablets were evaluated for physical properties, disintegration time, dissolution rate, and drug content. The results showed that the MDTs had acceptable physical properties, with disintegration times ranging from 15 to 60 seconds. The formulation containing croscarmellose sodium exhibited the fastest disintegration time and highest dissolution rate. The drug content was within the acceptable limits, and the tablets showed good stability. The developed MDTs of albuterol sulphate offer a convenient and patient-friendly dosage form, potentially improving therapeutic efficacy and patient compliance. The rapid disintegration and dissolution of the tablets can provide quick relief from bronchospasm, making them a valuable treatment option for asthma patients.
