PHARMACOGNOSTIC CHARACTERIZATION AND PRELIMINARY PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF PIPPALI (PIPER LONGUM L.) FRUIT

ABSTRACT Background: In Ayurveda, Pippali (Piper longum L.), or long pepper, is a highly valued herb known for balancing all three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. It is considered a powerful Rasayana (rejuvenative) and is recognized for its digestive stimulant and digestive properties. Used for centuries, it supports overall health, enhances digestion, and aids respiratory function. Pippali also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects. Materials and Methods: For the present study, fruit of Pippali (Piper longum L.) has been selected as herbal drug. A thorough study has been carried out of fruit of Pippali (Piper longum L.) including its macroscopical, microscopical and preliminary phytochemical studies. Observation & Result: The fruits of Pippali (Piper longum L.) are greenish black in colour, round and arranged in spike inflorescence and measures up to 3-4 cms in length. In the transverse section fruits, Central axis of spike, Outer epidermal layer filled with deep brown content, Thick Cuticle,Mesocarp, Reddish brown content, Oil globules, Fused Endocarp and Seed coat, Stone cells, Crystals of calcium oxalate, Starch grains, etc. were observed. In powder microscopy Fibre, Pitted vessel element, Starch grains, Brown content, etc. were found. In Preliminary Phytochemical screening, it showed the presence of alkaloid, saponin, and tannin.
